Q: Is Caddo Mounds a Texas State Park and do you accept the State Park Pass or Parklands Passport?
A:
No, effective January 1, 2008, Caddo Mounds State Historic Site was transferred to the Texas Historical Commission (THC) from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and is no longer considered a Texas State Park. The State Park Pass and Parklands Passport are statewide passes for parks operated by TPWD. Caddo Mounds State Historic Site is managed by the THC. Q: Is there anything in the mounds?

Though the mounds have been largely excavated by professional archeologists, portions remain unexcavated and contain artifacts and human burials. The site is protected by the Texas Antiquities Code, which prohibits the disturbance, collection or removal of artifacts from state property without a permit.

Q: Is walking or climbing on the mounds permitted?
A:
No. The mounds are important to the Caddo as ceremonial and burial places. Walking or climbing on the mounds is not allowed.
Q: How long does it typically take to tour the site?
A:
Approximately 45 minutes, including a 20-minute walk around the 0.7-mile interpretive trail.

Candy, sodas and water are for sale in the museum store.
Q: Who owns Caddo Mounds?
A:
The state of Texas owns Caddo Mounds. In 2008, the state legislature transferred the site from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the Texas Historical Commission (THC). It is no longer affiliated with the state park system. The THC is the state agency for historic preservation.
